A pioneering Independent Living scheme located in the heart of Chelmsford is opening its doors in December to give visitors the chance to see how it is helping local people aged 55 and over to stay independent.

Prospective residents, their relatives, carers and the wider community will be given tours of Freeman Court, located in Victoria Road, near Chelmsford rail station, at an open day being held on Saturday 2 December between 12pm and 4pm.

At the event, organised by Genesis Housing, who manage the scheme, visitors will be able to meet staff and current residents, see the facilities - including an apartment, discover what type of lifestyle they can expect from Independent Living housing and find out how care and support is delivered.

Freeman Court also offers community facilities for residents including two lounges, a large dining room, two lifts, laundry room, guest facilities, hairdressing salon as well as a beautiful garden and a terrace. The whole site can be accessed by wheelchair users.

Anne Gummer, Service Manager at Freeman Court said: “Flexible care and support are essential requirements for most of us as we get older. Our priority is to preserve independence and quality of life, while guaranteeing security and peace of mind for residents and their families. Freeman Court is ideally located in the heart of Chelmsford, just opposite the main train station, which itself plays a big part in meeting residents’ needs – close to green open spaces with a range of entertainment, cafes and restaurants, with quick and easy access to central London as well as routes to the seaside.”

Freeman Court offers 65 self-contained Independent Living apartments for rent by local people, with 24 hour on-site emergency care and support. The stylish, modern apartments are designed to meet changing needs and feature one or two bedrooms, living room, fitted kitchen and bathroom with pull cord alarm system.

Independent Living housing is sometimes referred to as Assisted Living or Extra Care. It is seen as a positive alternative to residential care homes for people who can continue to live independently in later life.

Independent Living is beneficial for people with a wide range of care and support needs. To be eligible to apply for an apartment an individual or couples must be aged 55 or over, require at least six hours per week of care and have local connections to Chelmsford.

The open day is open to all; there is no need to book in advance.
